Charcoal and graphite - communicating with a pencil

2020 brings with it a fresh opportunity to try new skills, or in my case, refine existing ones. Around the middle of last year I made a commitment to practice my sketching and look at ‘hyper-realism’ - the art of sketching in a way that captures your subject in as realistic a fashion as possible.

It became somewhat of an obsession (when I found the time!) and is absolutely meditation for me. So, here are a few of my pictures in the last six months. Each picture has taught me a little something about the medium I use, the techniques with light and shade and has re-framed my thinking, from it being a drawing to more of a sculpture you keep shaping.

Particularly poignant are the Australian subjects I did a while back, with my heart going out to our friends and family across the ditch facing the catastrophic bush-fire conditions.

I hope you enjoy these.
